July 2020 Edition

With protests continuing to sweep the nation, we have become acutely aware of the ways systemic racism impacts all of us in the healthcare field, particularly those who are black, indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC). As your organization develops an action plan to improve health equity, we’d like to suggest a few steps that may help you make meaningful progress:
  1. Get and validate the data. From COVID-19 to diabetes , data has consistently shown that there are worse health outcomes for minorities, specifically for black Americans. These disparities are well-documented throughout the U.S. Review the data from your organization, look for sources of inequity, and start to develop approaches to reducing health disparities. Engage the T2G team to determine how best to incorporate the strategies into your diabetes improvement program. Also, the AMGA Collaborative for Performance Excellence (CPX) is tracking this data within medical groups to help them address health disparity. If you are not a member, learn more about how CPX can help you make the best use of your data.
  2. Participate in the White Coats for Black Lives movement. Our banner this month features pictures from T2G participants across that nation that have already organized events to acknowledge the need to address systemic racism. It’s not too late to schedule one at your organization. Follow #WhiteCoatsforBlackLives for inspiration and don’t forget to include this hashtag with your photos!
  3. Access educational resources to build your action plan. There are already a number of great resources for integrating cultural competency programming into healthcare settings. The National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Strategies for Reducing Health Disparities from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are great places to start.
  4. Maintain your efforts. Change takes time and sustained effort. Stay current with data trends, news articles, and best practices. If you’re not sure where to start, try watching the latest webinars examining the intersection of race, chronic disease, and COVID-19. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) webinar on examining the impact of health disparities in a time of crisis and the CDC webinar on promising practices in health equity in the COVID-19 response are two great examples.

We all have a role to play in reducing health disparities in our organizations, and we encourage you to take action to create a more equitable healthcare system. If you have resources, tips, or best practices you’d like to share on this issue, please let us know!

We are pleased to announce that the case studies from the T2G Innovator Track Eye Care Cohort are now available! During this year-long Collaborative , T2G participants developed and implemented care processes that sought to increase eye exams for patients with diabetes. Cohort participants employed a variety of interventions, which collectively resulted in 8,600 additional diabetes patients with documented screening for diabetic retinopathy. Check out the case studies to learn more about the interventions, outcomes, and lessons learned from each organization in the Cohort.
